When I found out that GOMA was celebrating its 10th Birthday over the weekend, I had to go and be part of the fun. My very first visit to the gallery was during a year 12 Art excursion. GOMA was only new and it was my first time in a proper, large scale gallery. It was love at first sight. Everything about the building itself, to the art installations, to the view you get outside the gallery as it looks back over the Brisbane river onto the cityscape…. it has it all happening and oh how I adore.
My love affair with this place only intensified when I decided to have my wedding reception on the gallery’s rooftop terrace. Needless to say I now have more reasons than ever to feel a good level of affection for this place. Being creative in nature, I often find I drift in and out of feeling inspired with things. It’s incredibly frustrating but I think any creative person can tell you they have the same struggle!! I love moving about, because the change of scenery is generally all I need to get out of a creative rut. A quick visit to the gallery over a weekend is a sure way for me to shake off the dreaded uninspired funk.
Luckily the summer seems to be sorted. In celebration of the gallery’s birthday, they have an incredible summer festival line up of installations (If you’re in Brisbane, go and check out Sugar Spin which is on now. It’s free and very fun and perfect for little humans as well if you’re nervous about taking them to a gallery normally).
You will also be pleased to know that there is a giant spiral slide installed over two levels. That’s right, you can take a ride on the slide while you make your kids stand at the bottom and hold onto your valuables 😉
** Thank you to GOMA for inviting us to celebrate your 10th Birthday!! **
